A Tale of Two Drafts, part one

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Okay, inauspicious start here. I considered each of the black cards, but I thought that the guy behind me would pick one of the other two, and the guy behind him might pick the third, so I wanted to stay away from black altogether. After that, it was the Raptor or Punishing Fire. I think I blew the call.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Thought about the Arrow Trap, but I don't think it's as good as one would initially think. And, for those of you who know me, know that I love me some O-Ring, so naturally I think Journey is pretty good. I'd like to say that I contemplated other cards, like the Drake, but I'd be lying. As Micheal Lynn might say, "I only see one card in the pack."

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Another suboptimal pick here. I should have gone with the Inferno Trap, but I thought I could wheel the Cleric Ally and stay two color.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Yeah. The ally strategy is looking pretty good right now. But not as much later (see what I did there? That's foreshadowing.).

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Here, I was thinking that I kept seeing a good amount of red, and the Giant is a pretty good deal. I kept away from the Sell-Sword as I've passed a good amount of black, and he's not good enough to splash for by himself.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

Man, I love me some River Boa! My first deck ever had a River Boa in it. But, alas, I had finally figured out that red was open and that removal is better than bacon bits covered in chocolate on bacon. Still, looking back and seeing that I passed three Gladehearts and a River Boa makes me think that I may have missed on green here. But by the same token, how good is green really?

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Yeah. Green. I go with a defensive white card.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

I love this guy. I was happy to get him this late. Again, a good number of green cards in this pack.

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

I thought about this one A LOT. I wanted to take Into the Roil, but I talked myself out of it. I considered the Grunt, but he's pretty expensive and I just like the power of the Giant better.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

I should have taken the Berserker. I fell for the card draw. I could have used the two drop. Mistake here.

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

Yea! I wheeled the cleric . . . but I'm no longer in white. Awkward . . .

Pack 1 pick 12:

My Pick:

I took this thinking that I could splash the Journey to Nowhere and to help with the double reds.

Pack 1 pick 13:

My Pick:

PRETTY PICTURES!

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

Splashy, splashy, splashy.

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Whatever.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

I considered drafting the Pyromancer, but then I justified the fetchland as being in my colors . . . that and likely paying for this abortion of a draft.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

How good is this guy? I never got to play him so I don't know. Also, this helps me justify my raredraft . . . need the fetch for triple red.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Yeah. I missed on the Berserker. I just have a problem picking that guy this high. I figured that the drake was the better pick for what is turning out to be a pretty aggressive deck.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

I really like this guy, but I should be committing to the allies here. The puma would have been a better choice. I just kept thinking that I'd be able to pick up the allies later. Mistake.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

I'm ashamed. I love the two for ones, but this format is not about them. At least not in draft.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

I think he's much better than the blue ally.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

The bloodseeker shouldn't be here, but I'm happy to see the Grunts in this pack.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

I figure the scope will be good with the red landfall guy.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

Ally.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

That Primal Below should not be here. I went with the reach card.

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

Sideboard card.

Pack 2 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 14:

My Pick:

Nice pick up at 14.

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

Hi! I'm a big blue flyer that ends games. I'm also a possible tournament card that might make you some tickets. SOLD!

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

I love the fixing.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Logged out here. Would have preferred an autopick of the Gomoza, but still.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

Removal is as removal does.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

More mountains is mo' better!

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

Bad removal is still removal.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Ugh! Really?

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

Hi! I bash overhead, which seems to be a theme you are considering. I also AM ON FIRE!

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Now that I think about it, this guy with the red landfall flyers seem okay.

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

With two inferno traps . . . maybe?

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

Hi little flyer.

Pack 3 pick 12:

Pack 3 pick 13:

Pack 3 pick 14:

My Pick:

Ugh.

And from that, I made the following:

I decided not to splash. As you can tell, the curve is pretty wrong for this format. And I got taught that lesson in the very first match.

I would give screenshots of the match, but it was pretty much the same game, just of different lengths. Mono-black vampires. In the first game, it was Lacerator, Lacerator, Blood Seeker, and two hideous ends for my two raptors and a gatekeeper for the red flyer . . . I'm out of cards, draw my 18 lands and I'm dead. Similar story in the second game, except I get one raptor up to 5/5 and one up to 3/3 before he finds his removal and finishes me off.

  1. The only thing I can say here without leaving 100 lines of comment is that you should have drafted every. single. ally. The U/R deck is one of the best ones if you can get it.

  2. Agreed. After you have 3 Raptors in your first 4 picks you take allies over everything. Beserkers, Pumas, Aerialists, the works. Take them all!!!

  3. P3P3: I really think this was correct. The more I've played with scholar that more I hate him. I've spent early picks on this guy just to get them 3 picks later or even tabled. You just don't have time in this format to sit back and filter cards with a guy who isn't active until turn 4 and who doesn't block and at least trade with guys at its own casting cost. Granted I think playing 1 is fine, and he's not entirely bad in an agro deck, but you don't want to be discarding lands in this format. The only time I've had him be really good is in the U/W agro deck after I played a Khalani Gem.
