My Pick:
For some reason, the pack did not record in the file. I would like to say it was because I executed the electronic version of a windmill slam. I, however, considered, more than really necessary, whether I should take the Tower Gargoyle that was in the pack. This is why I'm bad.
Pack 1 pick 2:
My Pick:
I considered dragon fodder and blood cultist, but at the end of the day, I thought that the power of Jund charm was better than leaving myself open with fodder.
Pack 1 pick 3:
My Pick:
I found this pack pretty interesting. I considered infest, stinger and strix. I noticed the Gargoyle and wondered whether it portended flowing Esper. Infest has been disappointing to me when I've played it in the format. Seeing how the deck ended up, Strix might have been better, but in the end I picked Stinger.
Pack 1 pick 4:
My Pick:
I briefly considered Deathraiders and the Kathari. In the end, I thought the Courier's Cap was better and taking it also acted as a semi-hate (not true hate as I'd play it) with respect to the Sanctum Gargoyle I passed.
Pack 1 pick 5:
My Pick:
I considered the panorama, but the Ogre is a solid first-striking dude.
Pack 1 pick 6:
My Pick:
I think this is a highly suspect pick. The Reaver or the Obelisk seem like the better picks, but I took Roar as I wasn't totally happy with my removal at this point, I was pretty sure I was Jund splash U or Grixis splash G, so I figured taking roar wasn't horribly off. Especially since I rarely play Obelisks and Reaver is underwhelming.
Pack 1 pick 7:
My Pick:
I also think this pick is questionable. I'm not a fan of the thorn-thrash, but this was not a great pack for me. In hindsight, maybe I should have hated the Relic, as it is bad for Unearth.
Pack 1 pick 8:
My Pick:
I have never played with Minion Reflector, and it doesn't seem that bad with Unearth, but it seems clunky and slow. After that, it was between Kathari and the Scourge Devil. I chose the Devil due to the Unearth and the comes into play ability.
Pack 1 pick 9:
My Pick:
This is a Creeper that I was pretty sure was going to wheel the first time I saw it.
Pack 1 pick 10:
My Pick:
I took the shore snapper, thinking I might side him in against a bant deck for evasion. Maybe I should have hated the Waveskimer or the Sigil Blessing, as I knew that the snapper would probably not get sided in and definately wouldn't make the main.
Pack 1 pick 11:
My Pick:
Pack 1 pick 12:
My Pick:
I had hoped that this would come back around. I was quite happy to see a playable card at 12.
Pack 1 pick 13:

Pack 1 pick 14:

Pack 1 pick 15:

Pack 2 pick 1:
My Pick:
I'm pretty sure that this pick is wrong. With the unearth guys I was getting, bone splinters was probably the pick. You could even argue for Soul's fire, but I don't think it's as good as bone splinters with where I am in this draft. I, however, took Stinger, seduced by the havok that double stinger can wreck in the combat step.
Pack 2 pick 2:
My Pick:
I should have looked harder at Thoctar and Crasher, but I didn't. I considered Ad Nauseum, but I have not played with it enough to have an opinion. And I really wanted the fixing if I was going to try to be either Jundixs or Grixund.
Pack 2 pick 3:
My Pick:
This is where I really messed up. The pick was really between Agony Warp and Bone Splinters. I would have taken Warp, because I'm greedy and I want to live the dream on the two-for-one. But then I thought about having the Prince as late game. And I took him. But he's like Browbeat or any other choice card. If the opponent is screwed by either choice, you're already winning. If you're not already winning, their choice is never the one you want.
Pack 2 pick 4:
My Pick:
Apparently, for this pick and the last pick, I forgot that you are supposed to pick good cards for your deck. I didn't want to take call to heel this early (great with unearth), and I thought taking archers was spreading myself too thin for not a good enough reason. I probably sold Conjurer short on his defensive usefulness, especially since I doubted that I'd see an Iguanar this late.
So I hate drafted the Scourglass. I'd passed a good deal of pretty good Esper, and I knew that Scourglass would kill me against that deck.
Pack 2 pick 5:
My Pick:
I thought about the panorama and the deathraiders, but I the savage lands would make the jund charm much more playable.
Pack 2 pick 6:
My Pick:
Blightning was the only pick for me.
Pack 2 pick 7:
My Pick:
Screecher is solid, and I really don't like to play obelisks, my only other real choice here.
Pack 2 pick 8:
My Pick:
I thought about Cloudheath Drake, but Thrinax seems so much better. Especially with Hellion. And the savage lands helps, and I was hoping to get a land cycler (firey fall or absorb vis) in the last pack.
Pack 2 pick 9:
My Pick:
Carrion Thrash; see above Strinax.
Pack 2 pick 10:
My Pick:
I took submersion. I think I should have taken the crasher. At this point, it's unclear whether I'm splashing green or blue. So I should have taken the drop that helps if I end up in Jundxis over a sideboard card.
Pack 2 pick 11:
My Pick:
I should have taken the surge. It's probably more playable than silencers. Vectis Silencers was just me saying "hey, I need a blue dude, and deathtouch is not horrible." Again, this is why I'm bad.
Pack 2 pick 12:
My Pick:
My thought: Coma veil--bad removal is still removal.

Pack 2 pick 15:

Pack 3 pick 1:
My Pick:
Love me some slavedriver, but Malfegor tastes bomby, especially if you hold lands and get to turn them into removal spells.
Pack 3 pick 2:
My Pick:
This was an interesting pack. Weaver is good, but not the best in the pack here. I thought seriously about the septre, but it seems slow. And rupture spire seemed like good fixing when I'm starting to wonder if I'll see an absorb vis or a fall.
Pack 3 pick 3:
My Pick:
I didn't think I had enough blue to make the Sedraxis a Man'O War. And I needed a two drop/burn spell.
Pack 3 pick 4:
My Pick:
Might of alara may have been better, but I really like the knight for the first-strike, and I figured that I could live the dream if I drew rupture spire with the savage land or a forest (and I did).
Pack 3 pick 5:
My Pick:
I've seen manaforce mace be awesome, if slow. I should have considered the riders, and the strix.
Pack 3 pick 6:
My Pick:
What steps in front of a Mosstodon and trades?
Pack 3 pick 7:
My Pick:
Seventh Pick Slavedriver? Yes, please.
Pack 3 pick 8:
My Pick:
Unsummon seems okay, and I don't want another hill giant.
Pack 3 pick 9:
My Pick:
This was tough for me. Some people really like cumberstone. I was unsure, so I went with the Brackwater, which I've found to be solid, if not spectacular.
Pack 3 pick 10:
My Pick:
Controlled instincts generally has targets. I did not maindeck it, however.
Pack 3 pick 11:
My Pick:
When you have three possible bombs, digging seems good.
Pack 3 pick 12:
My Pick:
I tried to figure out which one to hate. I figure that strider is easier to play, so I picked it.

I didn't keep my decklist. Maybe next time if anyone really looks at this.
First round, I played an aggro Naya deck. Both games follow the same script. He gets out to a good start and I take a couple. I stop the bleeding with a first-striker or some other defense. He overextends. I drop Hellion for a beating.
The second match went three games. I lose a close first game, when his bant mage gives his Bull Cerdon flying. I win a blowout second when I hellion away his board, and unearth guys in waves. The third game, Prince of Thralls proves why he is bad, with him able to choose judiciously the loss of life or the permenant and I end up one mana short to unearth an elemental after charming away most of his board. I lose on the counterswing. I wish replays were up so I could see all the things I did wrong in the last game to lose with him at 2.
I like this idea. We should make this a Friday activity if you are down for sharing all your glory/failure. As far as this draft goes, I agree that your deck should have had two more bone splinters than it did. Also, I think that you are thinking about hating too early.
ReplyDeleteI'm down. Yeah, the Scourglass was bad, but I mean, Puppet Conjurer was the pick then?
ReplyDeleteHe would have gone great with double bone splinters.
ReplyDeleteI want to see your deck. Even when I got to the end, I couldn't decide if you were Grixis or Jund. After p1p2, I would have been solidily in Jund and taken Deathraiders, then Fodder. I don't know why you're still looking at Thoctar and Crasher p2p2. I think you're clearly Grixis by that point.
ReplyDeletePuppet Conjurer is an excellent card on it's own even without the synergy it has with the other cards in your deck.
ReplyDelete@Victor--Both you and Ryan are correct. Puppet Conjurer was the pick. There's the public humiliation. Hopefully, I will, in turn, get better.
ReplyDelete@Jon--I didn't know either. From what I recall, I was mainly Grixis splashing for Jund Charm, Carrion Thrash and Thrinax. Each one is good whether you can play it on time or later.
In answer to your comment and Ryan's comments, I will post my decklists for upcoming posts.
Thanks again for the comments guys.
