Meh.

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Meh. I still don't get why it's missing the first pack. Needless to say, it was a fairly weak pack, so I went with the solid, but uninspiring, Jungle Shrine. There was not even a debate; that's how bad the pack was.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Maybe I should have taken the Pridemage, but with reborn, I think you want to set yourself up to play the most powerful cards from the third pack. I think panoramas and tri-lands help in this regard. So, I thought about the jungle weaver and the pridemage, but I figured the panorama would help me in the third pack.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

I considered the Gargoyle, but Branching Bolt? I love me some Branching Bolt. That, and while I could not say for sure at this point in the draft given that a rare and an uncommon are missing, I thought the Branching Bolt might be an indication that Naya/Jund was open.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Nactal, with all uncommons in the pack makes me think that naya may be open. The only other card I considered was fire field ogre. I like the first-strikers.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

I like the uncommon drake, but I've passed ogre, carrion thrash and deathraiders. If I wanted to be that deck, I should have made different decisions. So, for me I was between visionary and the sorcerer. I like the seer and it makes aggro better, which I should be trying to be. But Visionary also smoothes draws and allows you to keep close hands. I went with Visionary, but I can see that I may have been wrong.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

Again, I may have been wrong here, as the Ranneret is solid. However, the option to splash black and find two of my main colors just seems too good. Again, I think for flexibility and being greedy, the panorama was right.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

I looked at fodder. I agonized over beetle. But in the end, aggro Naya seems better with the two drop that isn't dead if you draw him late. I opened with Nactal into sorcerer twice. Swinging with a 4/4 on turn two seems good.

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

I considered semi-hating the Undead Leotau (option to play with fixing); I considered the obelisk, but it seems bad for aggro and I don't much like them anyway. I went with the Infiltrator as a possible bit of reach for late game finishing after a stall and good aggro starts with exalted.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Yeah. I should have semi-hated the Undead Leotau. I knew I wouldn't play the obelisk.

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

I chose the best card in the pack. At this point, began to consider leaning black with white splash.

Pack 1 pick 12:

My Pick:

Yeah. I may be going black with this late zombie pick.

Pack 1 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

I was not that happy with this open. I went with Might of Alara, after considering the Bodyguard, Fusion Elemental and the Gluttonous Slime. I could totally be wrong, but with little removal at this point, I'm starting to wonder how I'll get rid of my opponent’s monsters.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

I may have been wrong here, but I don't think so. I went with the Nactal Hunt-Pride, thinking that it could break ground stalls for my more aggro creatures. He worked pretty well. Maybe I should have taken Drag Down or the Sphere. My problem with the Sphere is that I was hoping to be aggressive and try out cascade. I would rather flip an exalted two drop or removal over a Sphere. The basic landcyclers are better in this context, as they fix mana (albeit not as well), but will not trigger off of the cascade and are great to mediocre in the late game.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

I wanted to take the Channelhoard Worm. Instead, I went with the removal that will allow me to get through in the late game and smooth mana early. On some level, if I get to the point of casting worm, and I’m not already winning, I am not in the position I want to create with this deck.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

I briefly considered the Hellspark Elemental. I picked the Aven Squire instead, thinking that an evasive exalted guy better fits my concept.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

I considered this pick for some time. On one hand, I liked the idea of an aggressive swarm of that a turn 4 Spore Burst can create. Instead, I took the Ember Weaver, anticipating that I could easily pick reborn cards that will activate his bonus abilities.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

I love Voices of the Void, but again, at this point I had two ways of getting a swamp. In addition, more colors means a lower probability of a good start. Aerie Mystics seemed like a good flier, with an ability that can counter targeted removal.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Why hello celestial purge! How are you? What's that you say? Multi-color cards mean that you'll hardly ever be a dead card?

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

I chose Gleam of Resistance for the fixing aspect, as well as the late game ability to break a ground stall or to push through the last few points of damage.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

This was not my best pick. I should have rare-drafted the Conflux. I knew I was not going to use the Kaleidoscope. My thought in taking the Kaleidoscope was that I might need it if I open a bomb in the third pack.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

Nactal Savage is a mediocre two drop that has sideboard value against an Esper opponent. I hate seeing a Brackwater Elemental this late.

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

Wow. That’s a late Absorb Vis and a late Faerie Mechanist. The late Absorb Vis made me consider black again.

Pack 2 pick 12:

My Pick:

Again, Sylvan Bounty helps with mana fixing. I also considered that actually casting the spell would help win a race against another aggressive deck.

Pack 2 pick 13:

Pack 2 pick 15:

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

I wanted to take Terminate, but Knotvine Paladin’s double exalted ability fit my deck concept. In playing with Knotvine Paladin, I would have to say the pick was correct.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

I made a mistake with this pick. I should have taken Colossal Might. I took the Sangrite Backlash because . . . well I like removal and I like answers.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Should I have taken Terminate? I wanted to take Terminate, but the Bloodbraid Elf fits with aggressive concept. Bloodbraid Elf was excellent during play.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

Hi! I'm a crazy big guy that can bounce your exalted two-drop on turn three, after he's given someone a boost on your attack. Or, I can bounce your Bloodbraid Elf and let you cascade again. Good times.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

I chose the Pridemade over the Jund Hackblade, as the Pridemage is typically going to be a two for one, as most opponents will have a borderpost or a better target.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I may have mis-picked with this choice. I considered Fight to the Death, as in the late game, my creatures will be outclassed. Accordingly, there can be value in chump blocking and killing my opponent’s best creature(s). I chose Jund Sojourners, as it can force a trade if you need one more damage and you do not lose a card. Nonetheless, , if your creature is totally outclassed, it cycles and deals one to the dome.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

WOW. I thought this card would be good, but it was excellent. The power/toughness switch is problematic, but it made my aggro deck so much better. I considered the Armorguard, but not for long.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

An instant, conditional, spectral procession that's harder to cast, and that might mess up their combat math? Sure, I'll try it. I again considered the Armorguard.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Again, I considered the Armorguard, but I went with the Jund Sojourner for the reasons cited above. Also, you can occasionally pick off a Vithian Stinger or one of the Alara Reborn two-drop cycle.

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

See my comment above regarding Flurry of Wings. The Drake and the Leech may have been better picks.

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

I took the Kathari Bomber as it was the only card in the pack that was close to my colors, other than the Wings. I will never play or pick Magefire Wings.

Pack 3 pick 12:

My Pick:

Awkward.

Pack 3 pick 13:

My Pick:

Hello hackblade, I didn't get anything for you.

Pack 3 pick 14:

My Pick:

I actually played this card. It is good when you are aggro and have a number of exalted two drops. Wild Nactal swinging for 6 on turn three was excellent.

Pack 3 pick 15:

I played the following:

Jungle Shrine
Bant Panorama
Island
6 Forests
5 Plains
3 Mountains

Might of Alara
Fiery Fall
Gleam of Resistance
Sylvan Bounty
Sangrite Backlash
Branching Bolt
2 Jund Sojourners
Flurry of Wings
Violent Outburst
Glory of Warfare

Wild Nactal
Jessian Infiltrator
Sight Caste Sorcerer
Aven Squire
Jund Hackblade
Knotvine Paladin
Quasali Pridemage
Ember Weaver
Nultread Gargantuan
Bloodbraid Elf
Avian Mystics
Realm Razor
Nactal Hunt Pride

I went 2-1. I probably should have played sixteen land.

The first two matches played to the same script: I get off to an aggressive start, my opponent stabilizes a bit, and I punch through with a swarm, an evasive creature or by forcing favorable trades with the Nactal Hunt Pride.

The last match was frustrating. In the first game, I got off to an aggressive start (swinging for six early with Wild Nactal). I got my opponent down to three life, with him stabilizing with a bant charm, a Naya Battlemage and a Spore Burst for four. He plays some larger creatures, but I forced two two for ones with Nactal Hunt Pride and Might of Alara and then just the Hunt Pride itself. I then drew five lands in a row. During this time, he attacked aggressively and did not keep back sufficient blockers to account for haste creatures. So, if I drew one of my two haste creatures I would have won. If I drew Flurry of Wings, I could have surprises him after he declares attackers and swing back for the win. Any creature could have slowed the bleeding. After I lost, I looked at the next card, which was the Bloodbraid Elf. I guess I could have waited to force the two for ones until I had gas in my hand, but at the same time, I would have just given him more time to draw as well.

In the second game, I mulled to five and got an aggressive start, but I ran out of gas with my opponent at nine life. I could not punch through on topdecks. Again, I wish that MODO would activate replays so I could review the games to examine my mistakes in more detail.

  1. P2p2, I'm under the impression that armillary sphere is the best common in the set. P2p3, Charnelhoard Wurm is the nuts, bombs over removal would be my strategy here. Plus you already have Jund Panorama.

  2. Thanks for the comments Ryan. Your imput is always welcomed. At any rate, when I revised the post to address your comments, I addressed the Armillary Sphere point and the Wurm point. You are likely correct with both, but my thinking as to both is reflected in the revision.

In putting in the decklist, I probably could have played black, but I was already pushing the mana for an aggressive deck.

    Thanks again.
