Getting Started in Zendikar

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Not much going on in this first pack. The only card that stands out as a first pick to me is the Pitfall Trap. Also it's the only white card, seems like a reasonable place to start. We are passing no real notable signals in this pack.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Two good red cards and one nuts black card. Marsh Casualties is a blowout nearly every time. Only real signal we are sending now is that red is open.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

I agonized over this pick. There are no white or black cards worth taking in the pack. And it's safe to say we've forgone red at this point. So that leaves us with the Torch or the Cage Trap. It's only pick three and I feel like the Cage Trap is the better card. Once again, all we are passing is red.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

With two good blue cards in the pack there is likely only one player in blue to our right. This pack presents us with a choice; white or black. Marsh Casualties pulls me harder than Pitfall Trap so I went with the Mosquito here. We leave playables in every color but black.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

I was excited to see another Baloth Cage Trap. It seemed there was only one other green drafter to my right. None of the other cards in this pack are strong enough to send a signal.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

I feel like the packs in Zendikar are a little uneven. This pack has seven solid playables counting lands. Whiplash trap should never be this late, and neither should Pitfall Trap. I figured if I ended up B/G I could always splash two Pitfall Traps.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Apparently there is only one (competent) red drafter at the table. The Glider is a great man, but I feel it's too late to jump into red at this point, so I pick up the Expedition Map for the possible splash.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Trash, maybe we'll end up with a lot of allies somehow?

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

This guy has never let me down. He is great out of the board and not a terrible 23 card either.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Taking on color trash. This card is only good in the balls to the walls aggro decks.

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

I have had to play this before. Note the late Ravager.

Pack 1 pick 12:

My Pick:

Trash.

Pack 1 pick 13:

My Pick:

Trash.

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

Crossroads will make any white deck, no idea while it's still here.

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

People are idiots for taking lands over great sideboard cards. Thanks guys.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

The island walk guy is pretty good, but since blue is one of the two colors we are not in, it's Journey to Nowhere for us. Nowhere, exactly where this tri-colored monstrosity is headed. This pack now includes one average to below average card of every color. Some packs are so underwhelming.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

This pick is between the Quest for Zombie Giant and another Journey. I like 5/5 abominations, but I also like knowing where my deck is going. It seems impossible to not play white at this point.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Two white cards that will make my deck every time versus another Marsh Casualties. My deck may not know where it's going, but there is no doubt there will be many corpses. I'm hoping to pick up enough playables to ditch green at this point.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Or I could take another green card. At the time I felt like the Antelope was so much better than the Diabolist or Puma. Wish I had taken the Puma here.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

So I haven't figured out if people can't evaulate cards for shit, or if the packs are really that lopsided. There's a solid card in every color but black here. The skyfisher is the second best white common behind Journey. Please and thank you.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

There's that island walking guy again. Shieldmate is a solid man who has never let me down.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Shortcutter is still here, once again confirming the scarcity of red drafters. I guess this black guy will make our deck as we are scrambling for playables at this point.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Dear Lord, please do not let this man make my deck. Amen.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

A two drop seemed better at this point for us than another swampwalker. Even if he is worse than grizzly bear.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

W...T...F?!?

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

It's a black card, I have played it once.

Pack 2 pick 12:

My Pick:

This guy is worse than tempest owl.

Pack 2 pick 13:

My Pick:

I don't think the effect on this land is worth playing. In decks were you need the damage, you can't afford to plat ETBTLs.

Pack 2 pick 14:

My Pick:

Trash.

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

Trash.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

I know I just tabled this card, but this is the best black card in the pack for our deck. It's really between this and the Thief in my mind, and I don't have enough allies for him to really fire, but I do have a lot of kill spells. Also four playable black cards in one pack, none of them table.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

I felt like I couldn't support the Gatekeeper, plus I need a way to win. Skyfisher can also move the Journeys around if need be.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Hill Giant is so big in this format, plus this guy can get bigger.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

And nothing. Soul Stair Expedition is a fine card, just not spectacular in my deck. I really need to be picking up some dudes.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Ugh, no black or white cards for us in this pack. At least we picked up that map.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

On color dude, yes please.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Two grunts are better than one? Something has gone horribly awry.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

This pick was just wrong, I must have been blinking a lot because I just missed the ox. He would have definitely made my deck. My apologies.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

None of these will make the deck.

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

Whatever.

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

This card makes the cut. I am ashamed.

Pack 3 pick 12:

My Pick:

People show this guy no respect.

Pack 3 pick 13:

My Pick:

Trash.

Pack 3 pick 14:

My Pick:

People are still picking lands over playables.

Pack 3 pick 15:

My Pick:

Trash.

I tried to upload a screenshot of the deck, but I couldn't get it to work. I ended up splashing red for the two Grunts to have some resonably sized dudes. I won the first round on the back of double Quest for the Gravelord both games, and then lost in the second round because I got stuck on four lands game one, and then I kept a two lander with double Marsh Casualties game two and never drew a third land.
